When data protection affects lives: Delaware Department of Correction

In an organization that incarcerates and rehabilitates offenders who have broken the law, data is everything. All data must be well managed, including the offender record, sentence orders, electronic health records and data collected from cameras within the facilities. Legal challenges require quick access to the data that provides the offender’s story, so data must be accessible.

“We have to be data ready because everybody's looking for those data points. Data helps provide a story,” explains Phil Winder, Director of Information Technology for the Delaware Department of Correction. “We're actually at a paradigm shift in corrections where we're leaving the old paper and moving to the technology era. Everything in prison is technology.”
